Here are some tips to improve your footage quality:

  1. If you have access to more than one camera -- use it! Multiple angles are great for variety and someone is bound to catch any nasty wipeout on one of those cameras!

  2. Do not film into any light sources. This means, don't let your subject come between you and a light or the sun. If you do this, your subject will become darker or a full silhouette.

  3. Film on days with nice weather. Cloudy days are poor filming days because your picture will appear greyer than usual. If you are filming on sunny days, morning and evening are the best times to capture good quality video.

  4. Keep the camera steady! Shaky video makes footage nearly worthless because people watching can't focus on the image. Hold the camera close to your body, use a solid object for stability, or even use a tripod if you still can't keep the camera steady.

  5. Do NOT shut off the camera as soon as the action ends! For example, when many people see a crash, they will shut off the camera as soon as it happens. What you want to do is keep your camera running to capture reactions of people and find out what happened!

  6. Film more than just action. Talk to people, listen to people, make intelligent commentary, and get 'behind the scenes' footage of stunt preparation, or stupid stuff that happens.

  7. Variety is the spice of any video.
